In my family we can’t imagine a year without at least a weekend in Pawley’s Island, South Carolina. My husband has been going there ever since he was so young that he assumed it was his “Aunt Polly’s” island. We’ve taken friends, family, and anyone else willing to brave the three-hour journey packed in the Suburban with sand covered beach toys. The houses on the sound end of the island lie between the ocean and the marsh, making for days spent splashing in the ocean and nights tasting homemade she-crab soup watching the sun set on the dock. The “arrogantly shabby” culture of the island is mirrored in the Pawley’s Island Cupboard, which is aesthetically pleasing enough to be placed the most austere of Pawley’s homes but handcrafted from the finest plantation grown mahogany to withstand even the shabbiest.
